This feature will become useful after you have completed the "tour" along the default path: from the Inventory you can then go to writings you haven't seen by selecting the titles in blue. This color scheme is carried through in map view: green boxes lie on the defaut path; blue boxes do not, but can be reached either from the Inventory (the easiest way) or from map view (which requires some canny manipulation of the tool palette).
