OTHER WRITINGS of UNKNOWN PROVENANCE

The remaining Writings of Unknown Provenance, despite clearly having different Authors, seem to share a sensibility, one that has withdrawn from the world that prizes Great Deeds and Important Ideas, in favor of a simpler, almost childlike perspective.

Here their arrangement does suggest, if only mildly, an order — not so much of chronology, but rather of a pleasant sequence for reading.

In {Will she speak?} the unknown narrator describes a moment of intense anticipation among a large group of simple people.

It could be fancifully proposed that {The soul is good} might be the kind of speech that the audience in the first Writing had assembled to hear...

While {another way} is a dialogue, it may be between a teacher and disciple...

Finally, {pool} presents a striking and kathartic experience in which a person who has long suffered some kind of alienation from her fellow creatures finds unexpected release.
