It is impossible to resist imagining that the Writing {purple berries} is an adjunct, even a kind of sequel, to the narrative of the Exile, and indeed there is reason to suppose that we have the latter Author's work at all thanks to its rescue by this unnamed soldier, who disobeys the orders of his superiors in order to follow the dictates of his own sense of what is just and what is evil.

Be that as it may, nothing in the Writings themselves *explicitly* links the two Authors other than (need it be said?) the desire we — who come upon these inscriptions in a state completely alienated from their original context(s), and in any event know nothing about said context(s) either — feel *must* be their relation to each other.
